Description

Smart glass incorporates a Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) film laminated between glass layers using EVA interlayers. When powered (36-110VAC), liquid crystals align to create transparency; when unpowered, crystals scatter light creating an opaque frosted appearance. Available in laminated configurations (10-14mm) and IGU systems (24-32mm) for enhanced thermal performance. Switching time <0.1 seconds with operational life exceeding 100,000 switching cycles.

Advantages
Instant privacy control (<0.1 second switching)99% UV blocking protectionAcoustic insulation improvement (20% noise reduction)Projection screen capability when opaqueNo moving parts or maintenance of blinds/curtainsCompliant with AS/NZS 2208 safety glazingEnergy savings through reduced HVAC loadsHygienic surface (no dust collection)Dimmable options available (0-100% transparency)Multiple control options (switch, remote, app, automation)
Cautions
High initial cost (AUD $1,100-1,500/m² installed)Requires constant power for transparency (5W/m²)Not completely opaque (translucent when off)Vulnerable to moisture ingress at edgesLimited fire resistance ratingPotential yellowing after 10-15 yearsElectrical installation requiredCannot achieve complete blackoutSize limitations (max 2m x 6m single panel)Higher embodied carbon than standard glass

PDLC technology developed in 1980s USA, with first architectural applications in 1990s. Australian market adoption began early 2000s with initial focus on commercial applications. Local suppliers established from 2010 onwards, with Switch Glass (WA), Polytron, and international brands. Technology improvements include reduced haze (now <2.5%), faster switching (<0.1s), and extended warranty periods (up to 7 years). Current Australian installations exceed 10,000m² annually with growing residential adoption.
